As you will have certainly already heard from various media sources, the German government has decided to increase the truck toll as from 01.12.2023.
What does it mean?
With effect from December 1, the truck toll in Germany is to be increased significantly, and an additional toll for traffic-related CO2 emissions is to be introduced. It is feared that the toll rates will nearly double.
In carbon dioxide emission class 1, which currently includes the vast majority of trucks, the additional toll surcharge for Euro 6-class trucks over 18 tons with three axles will be 12.4 cents, with four axles 13.4 cents and for trucks with five or more axles 15.8 cents. With the current total toll rate of 19 cents per kilometer, we are talking about an additional charge of 70 to 83 percent.
Emission-free vehicles for the time-being, will be exempt from tolls until the end of 2025.
Smaller vehicles to pay from mid-2024
The weight limit of the toll is to be lowered as of 01.07.2024 from currently 7.5 to 3.5 tons. These trucks will then have to pay 15.1 cents / km (EURO 6).
Trademen’s vehicles are exempt from this.
What will happen to the additional revenue?
According to the German government, the estimated additional revenue of approximately 8 billion euros will be invested primarily in infrastructure and the expansion of the rail network.
How does this affect you?
The logistics and freight forwarding companies have no other choice but to implement this measure. The transport prices in the area of procurement and distribution logistics in Germany, and naturally in the regions that use Germany as a transit country must be adjusted accordingly.
We will be happy to provide you with more detailed and specific information in due course.
